Recent attempts to improve turbocharged passenger car engine performance have resulted in the introduction of a new turbocharger component: the variable nozzle turbine. Field tests of the variable nozzle turbine turbocharger have demonstrated significant improvements in overall vehicle response. This paper will discuss the development of the VNT and the particular concerns associated with its becoming an integral part of a turbocharger.
