This paper discusses the EC Directive on air quality standards for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) which was published in March 1985. The paper gives some general background to the Directive, the Limit Value for NO2 and the monitoring requirements contained in the Directive. A description is given of the air quality measurement techniques used by the UK for identifying areas influenced by traffic emissions where Directive monitoring sites may be required. The methods used in selecting individual locations for traffic-related sites are also described, together with the conclusions of the UK programme in terms of the selection of such sites. Finally a broader discussion of the relationship between traffic emissions and urban NOx/NO2 concentrations is given.
