The X-29 Technology Demonstrator is a highly unstable forward swept wing aircraft that is totally dependent on its flight control system to provide stability, handling qualities, and optimized aircraft performance. The -29.A completed the envelope clearance phase of its flight test program at the NASA Ames/Dryden Flight Research Facility at Edwards, Ca. The flight control system performance results are reviewed in this paper in terms of the flight control system software, hardware, system stability, and aircraft handling qualities during this flight test period. The program has been highly successful, with few software discrepancies or hardware problems. We review the aircraft handling qualities in terms of pilot rating and equivalent system analysis. The flight control system performed very well and achieved its design goals. This paper summarizes the flight control refinements based on flight test results and discusses the lessons learned.
