An expert system based voltage drop and power loss computational tool is under development that calculates system voltages and power losses of an AC or DC electrical power distribution system based on simple input. Conductor quantity, size, length, load power requirements, supply voltage, and temperature are inputs that shall be provided by the user. The user friendly, graphical expert system software will allow common power distribution objects to be created once, cloned as needed, and interconnected to form a model of an electrical system. The ability to have schematics hidden on sub-workspaces will allow a top level view while not compromising analytic detail. Former computational algorithms implemented in conventional computer code will be greatly simplified by the use of structured natural language rules and procedures. The tool will inherit information storage and real-time monitoring capabilities that will make it valuable for engineering reference and power system observation. This tool will replace an existing software program for reasons of maintainability, ease of use, and expandability.
