The next generation of commercial aircraft, satellites, tanks, and various military platforms are turning to Solid-State Power Controllers (SSPCs). ILC Data Device Corporation (DDC) has seen this trend, based on its years of supporting high volume M1A2 Tank production, satellite and space programs, and the experiences that goes hand-in-hand with the latest SSPC technology. There are clear definable features and advantages that have a profound impact on the next-generation applications that use SSPCs. The present design of SSPCs has come a long way, but the future brings improvements that will necessitate the use of SSPCs in the next generation of power distribution systems. This paper reviews the tradeoffs, available today in SSPC technology, that can help reduce the overall cost. The paper also focuses on the various technical issues, that are now reasonable options, for dedicated, high-tech, power distribution systems.
