Three multiple access protocols for a cellular mobile packet radio network whose users are vehicles moving over an intelligent highway system are studied by means of simulation, and their performances are compared. The three multiple access protocols are carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) and its multichannel extension (M-CSMA), access virtual channel radio independent station algorithm (AVC-R-ISA), and a modified version of access control with interference detection (AC/ID), that will be called cellular AC/ID (C-AC/ID). This is a novel proposal that results from the adaptation of the AC/ID protocol to a cellular environment. The simulation results show that the M-CSMA protocols perform better at low loads, but the AVC-R-ISA, and the C-AC/ID protocols provide lower packet delay variances when the radio channel is heavily loaded.
