The method is based on a specially developed mathematical apparatus of integrodifferential matrix operators. The new approach provides a possibility for building a broad range of echo locators and submarine tomographic and oceanic introscopic devices. Unlike conventional location algorithms used for reconstruction of stratified media, the new method makes it possible to define the physical characteristics of the medium being investigated. In addition to representing the layer images, the algorithm provides the numeric values of the density, compressibility, and phase velocity of sound for each layer. The method is tolerant of any locating signal with an arbitrary time relationship. The results of a computer simulation are described.
