Space laser communications has been attracting the interest of people as a new future space communication technology which enables massive data transmission and has characteristics that it is compact and light, and free from interference. Intensive studies have been made on space laser communications in the United States, Europe and Japan in order to begin full applications in the 21st century. The authors describe the historical background, trends, characteristics and basic technologies of space laser communications, and present and future plans of research and development in Japan, referring to the project of launching a small satellite called OICETS (Optical Inter-Orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite) in 1998.
