The transmission of energy over large distances poses a timely problem in connection with the prospects of building high-power tunable free-electron lasers capable of emitting radiation of high optical quality at frequencies in the transparency window of the atmosphere and in the band of maximum efficiency of semiconductor transducers. The objective of this note is to point out a phenomenon that can hinder the transmission of laser energy to a satellite.
