The authors discuss man's needs in energy and environmental constraints on energy generation on the Earth. It is shown that a most rational way would be to move bulk power generation and energy-intensive manufacturing to outer space. A brief analysis is offered of various approaches to this problem, including the already existing prototypes for direct conversion of solar and thermonuclear energy to electricity. The urgent need is demonstrated for relevant programs to be launched in the nearest years.
