Microcomputers have been used widely for control of the engine and automatic transmission since the latter half of the 1970s. At present, the automatic transmission and the engine are combined into one engine control system in accordance with the synergistic effect of improved microcomputer functions and high-function sensors. Microcomputers will be integrated into a total automotive control system. The benefits of decentralised control are highlighted.
