The author finds that software error is just one of a large number of risks associated with the development and production of any electronic module for a vehicle. The motor industry has several generations of experience in assessing and managing these risks in its vehicle development programmes. The particular risk associated with software needs to be measured against these well-known concerns, so that appropriate resource can be applied to control it.
