Experiments have been developed by the French automobile group during a lightning testing campaign in order to evaluate, in situ, the risks incurred by automobiles from thunderstorm illumination. The authors describe the logistics developed in view of performing the tests on two vehicles: a PSA 405 MI 16 and a Renault truck, placed on the lightning research station of St Privat D'Allier during summer 1990. These two vehicles are equipped with different electronic systems such as an antilock braking system, an electronic injection unit, a dynamic suspension system, and lastly, on the passenger car only, a simplified multiplexed system. The multiplexed system is only a mock-up and has been developed to test its electromagnetic susceptibility.
