The Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) Power and Power Conditioning program was established to develop the power technologies needed to enable the envisioned ground and space based sensor and weapon systems. Solar power technologies have demonstrated survivability with less weight than other systems. Hardware is being produced for space nuclear power, and lightweight, multimegawatt power source technologies have been demonstrated. These achievements will also impact applications beyond the scope of SDI into other DoD missions, NASA missions, and commercial applications.
