The decentralized adaptive controller design process is discussed, and results of the actual implementations on a flexible structure for active vibration damping are presented. The JPL/AFAL flexible spacecraft control dynamics simulator is a labscale model for a large antenna-like flexible structure. It shows many of the characteristics of large space-based structures and provides challenging problems to the control designer. The experimental facility and system model, the adaptive controller design strategy and the implementation issues, including MATRIXx simulation studies, are presented.
