The Royal Air Force undertakes the calibration of all RAF, RN and MOD (PE) navigation and landing aids, both in this country and at bases abroad. The variety of facilities that require flight calibration consist of precision approach radar and ILS through to air defence radars, with a range of different types of navigation equipment in between. The paper outlines how the RAF's flight calibration organisation has evolved, from its earliest days up to the present time. The task that is currently undertaken and the equipment, manpower and organisation that are needed to achieve the task are examined, including a look at what the future holds in terms of more reliable and accurate navigation and landing aids.
