The object of a passenger information system is to make the journey more comfortable for customers by providing suitable status information. The authors discuss how the customers information requirements affect the system used in the generation, distribution and presentation of this data. In order to explore these aspects, the authors consider a journey from the port of Poole in Dorset to London Waterloo. This journey is used to determine the necessary facilities needed to provide a range of passenger information systems.
