High-power microwave (HPM), is generally considered to be microwave radiation at powers above a gigawatt within the normal microwave frequencies of 1 to 30 GHz. Scientists have considered HPM for military use off and on for about 30 years. The relevance of this research for military application has grown with the military's use of weapons systems that rely on sophisticated electronics such as ballistic missiles and aircraft. Interest in these high levels of microwave radiation increased in the early 1970s, about the same time development of very high-power pulse sources began, devices which direct pulses of energy at a given target. There are currently no operational HPM system; the technology is still in the research and development stage with work being conducted at university, military and government laboratories all over the country. However, there has been significant improvement in the technology. For instance, the peak power of these HPM sources has increased by an order of magnitude every decade.
