The Los Angeles Light Rail Transit (LRT) system will open on 4 July 1990. It will interact in various ways with the heavy rail and road systems. After a general description of the system, the article discusses the need for active signal priority and the objectives which the signal system seeks to meet. The components of the system-detectors, travel time predictors and controllers, and the central computer and SCADA centre,-are described. The system's operation is then considered, and failure management is discussed.
