The intermediate processor (IP) has been developed to act as a gateway device for connecting a host tactical data system (TDS) to a C2 (command-and-control) terminal. Originally developed for JTIDS (Joint Tactical Information Distribution System) testing, the IP has evolved into a generic product which can act as a virtual host to a C2 system and a 'virtual terminal' to a host TDS. In this manner, the C2 terminal and its host can be physically remote from one another and operate as if they are directly connected. The system is specifically designed to adapt the JTIDS terminal protocol into a format more efficient for transmission to a host TDS over high-quality Telco data links via terrestrial or satellite means of transmission. The IP provides a completely transparent and fully encrypted link between the host site and its associated remotely located terminal. The IP uses 9.6 kb/s to 64 kb/s in the full-duplex DATAPHONE Digital Service Telco links with error protection.
