The US Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) manages the development of high technology and its applications. Among the current projects are new avionics architectures and a new family of aircraft engines. One area of emphasis is the science and technology and development planning program formerly called Project Forecast and later Forecast II. The Air Force made its first attempt at building an integrated avionics architecture in the 1970s with an approach termed the digital avionics information system (DAIS). Many of the DAIS concepts were employed in the avionics systems of the F-15 and F-16 fighters, as well as the B1 bomber. A more ambitious architecture, called Pave Pace is now being examined.
