The feasibility of the near-term demonstration of electromagnetic space launch (EMSL) is discussed. Minimum requirements for such a demonstration are derived along with extrapolations to near-term operational EMSL systems. Launcher, aerodynamic, and orbital issues are detailed. A low-cost battery power supply system is proposed to reduce EMSL costs and technical risk. Applications to military and civilian space programs, global communication systems, re-entry vehicle testing, and the National Aerospace Plane are outlined
