The author considers a concept which combines a conventional system with an electromagnetic launcher (EML) in a hybrid system. The approach utilizes a conventional Mann barrel as the injector for a railgun accelerator. An interim stage reduces the residual contaminants allowed to enter the accelerator. The advantages of such a system include: (1) reduced time-of-flight, thus simplifying the fire control problem, (2), possible increased terminal ballistics effects, and (3) the prospect of rapid development into a tactical weapon using conventional weapon injection and present projectile technology. The system is composed of a pulse power source, power interface, preaccelerator, gas manager, electromagnetic launcher, launch package, and control system. A laboratory hybrid EML launch system used for technical demonstrations is discussed
