Valeo has taken a step towards vehicles of the future with no clutch pedal, relieving drivers of mental and physical stress. The clutch function is no longer needed by the user, the gear lever giving the necessary commands; the general functioning of this is described. A special type of compensation is employed in the system, based on a moving type of chain and its action is described. The electronic control is carried out by microprocessor. Whilst this adds to equipment complication, in case of failure, diagnosis of faults is relatively easy. The system has been under development since 1980 and use in quantity is hoped for in 1990.
