Frequency management techniques are playing an increasingly important role in the design and implementation of the new generation of tactical and strategic HF communications systems. The increasing demand for high quality data links and spread spectrum capability has established automated frequency management as a necessity rather than just a convenience. The authors outline the purpose of frequency management, the major components of a particular frequency management facility developed in Australia, and two projects to which this facility has been applied. They conclude with a statement of the efficacy of frequency management and likely future directions.
