Using a unique computer system designed by AT&T, the US Air Force stores drawings on optical disks, making them easy to update, retrieve, reproduce and transmit electronically. Response time is reduced from days to minutes. Additionally, the Army Material Command is adopting a system nearly identical to the Air Force's system to handle its engineering data requirements. The Army's system is the digital storage and retrieval engineering data system (DSREDS) and the Air force's system is the engineering data computer assisted retrieval system (EDCARS). The operational aspects and benefits of these systems are described.
