Describes the transmission properties of dispersion-shifted fiber cables operating at 1.55 mu m that realize repeater spacings twice as long as those in a conventional high-capacity transmission system operating at 1.3 mu m. The dispersion and optical loss characteristics of various dispersion-shifted fibers are examined theoretically and experimentally. The properties of a slotted-core type optical fiber cable using 4-fiber ribbons and the experimental results of the sea trial are also discussed. These studies reveal that dispersion-shifted fiber cables are practical for both high-capacity terrestrial and submarine transmission lines with repeater spacings of 80 km and 120 km, respectively.
