Not only handicapped persons but also elderly persons living in Hokkaido desire to participate in outdoor activities during the winter season which is characterized by heavy snow and low temperature. There are, however, many problems on wheelchair use during the winter; roads covered by snow and ice are very slippery, casters are easily buried in the snow. In this work, three types of electric wheelchairs; rear-wheel drive with free casters, rear-weel drive with mechanically controlled casters and front-wheel drive, were tested for the driving ability on snowed road and on iced road. In addition, a computational method was proposed to simulate the driving ability of each electric wheelchair which was obtained from the experiment on snowed and dried roads.
