The flood of additional information directed at the driver of today's vehicles, along with the tendency to add a new display and keyboard for each new function, leads inevitably to an overloaded cockpit. The risk of distraction must be counteracted by carefully considering the ergonomic requirements of the man/machine interface. The present paper provides an approach to satisfy the automotive display requirements with a strong emphasis on the European situation, along with a brief reviev of candidate display technologies. Electrooptical displays and flat screens incorporatimg liquid-crystal technology will be used to an increasing extent in future vehicles. Their use extends from the instrument cluster through the center console to the rear passenger compartment area. The classic instrument cluster will be extended with graphics-cable display modules displaying information relevant to the driver from the vehicle and from navigation systems (route guidance symbols). HUDs represent a practical complement to the instrument cluster and are particularly suitable for information in the form of prompts. The center console is the obvious choice for display of information relevant to driver and passenger from various information components, displayed on a screen with a size between 15 and 17.5 cm (5-6 in.) and operated by means of a few operating controls with menu prompting. Standardization of displays formats allowing installation in standardized installation compartments permits the development of low-cost basic modules with customized configuration options for the user interface. Owing to the availability of appropriate transmission methodes to the moving vehicle, smaller monitors for entertainment and multimedia purposes will be found in future in the rear passenger compartment area. Flat PC monitors, integrated in the passenger seat's backrest, will, in the future, make possible the mobile office with all the usual components of the office workstation, in conjunction with familiar mobile services. A broad range of suitable displays is available for all these applications.
