In 1992 UIC Railways had signed the Project Declaration for the European Train Control System (ETCS). This event has started the A200 ETCS project. The main goal of this project is to achieve interoperability between different railway administrations by preparing a new train control system which will be accepted by all the European railways at least as standard for international lines. The railways have agreed the Functional Requirements Specification which become an UIC fiche in October 1996. The work on System Requirements Specification and Subsystem Requirements Specifications are still under the process of achieving agreement, although call for tenders for some installations are already started. As a result of phase 1 the project team has pointed three configurations giving positive result of cost/benefit screening. This configurations are: ERTMS level 1 with Euroloop infill; ERTMS level 1 with KHP infill; ERTMS level 2. The second phase objective is to pint one configuration and prepare call for tender for it.
