In the past, the questions regarding the optimal energy supply systems for modern, highly-efficient railway systems have often been examined. These investigations have been made especially in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In these countries, there are central 16 2/3 Hz-systems with an overhead wire voltage of 15 kV, owned by the railways companies. The most important items in these investigations have been questions regarding the voltage level, system frequency and system conception (central-decentral) as far as operation characteristics, reliability and costs are concernd. The systems of the above-mentioned railways fulfill all technical requirements to modern railway energy systems. A modification of the systems, in principal, is not necessary from the economical point of view. In this connection, the existence of an own energy transport system was an essential factor. When comparing the centralized to the to the decentralized railroad power supply systems, it becomes obvious that the requirements for the power reserve are much higher for the decentralized than for the centralized systems, because the transportation facility of a network is not available. The total efficiency rate, however, is almost the same in both cases, because the network losses are compensated by the increased converter losses. The development of the centralized railroad power supply systems is a prerequisite for the economical and flexible operation of new high-speed railway links. The centralized supply system offers the best possibilities for a cooperation between the public power supply system, the power plant companies and the railroad companies. A network is an important prerequisite for the realization of the high-speed railroad network for passengers and freight traffic, because it ensures the efficient and reliable power supply required for this purpose. This comprises the construction of railroad power plants equipped with modern environmental protection technology and optimized degrees of efficieny.
