The Fulmen research program aims to provide new methods to define the lightning threat for each specific new aircraft or helicopter program, and a more realistic and quantitative evaluation of the threat levels to be sustained by a structure or equipment. A need for upgraded regulations and for scientific knowledge to establish them drove the kick-off of this project. The main tasks of the project are 1) to collect background material such as lightning measurements, 2) to study the different phases of lightning attachment to an aircraft, 3) to study the coupling mechanisms between the external and internal lightning environments, and 4) to synthesize the research work to propose and substantiate improved environment definitions for upgraded regulations.
