Radar systems sre suitable for use in automobile safety monitoring applications and will support the inherent constraints of on-board automobile use. They are effective at short range (e.g. for parking assistance) and at long range, for determining the location and speed of vehicles or obstacles on the roadway, under all weather and visibility conditions. Thomson-CSF has developed a radar for intelligent speed control, a function that we expect to find integrated on top-end vehicles by the end of the decade. Second-generation radars will provide obstacle detection and avoidance functions, but commercial release for this kind of systems will depend on developments in integrated microwave technologies if essential cost and reliability targets are to be reached.
