The product introduction process in the automotive industry - ranging from new model concept to volume production - involves the participation of several geographically dispersed companies acting at different levels of the supply chain. These are car manufacturers, 1st tier suppliers and 2nd tier suppliers as well as small and medium enterprises like e.g. toolmakers. Growing globalization and competition forces car manufacturers, their suppliers and subsuppliers to streamline the product introduction process. This requires the formation of concurrent virtual enterprises that cooperate across enterprise boarders. In the two-year project 'TEAM', Rover and Fiat together with their suppliers are now gaining experience how to increase the performance of their joint teams by telecollaboration. Based on telecommunications support, telecollaboration is a way of synchronous as well as asynchronous working between people and entities that are geographically dispersed. Multimedia Conferencing and Multimedia Messaging together with Multimedia Archiving/Retrieval are the respective instruments of an advanced multimedia information flow and storage (both real-time and non-real-time).
