Car-sharing is a new concept of joint vehicle usage. For solving urban traffic problems car-sharing is of essential interest. The users reduce their car mileage per year with positive effects on traffic conditions. Additionally a higher integration of public transport can be reached. By penetrating the whole market potential (2.5 Mio. drivers) the present number of cars can be reduced by 1.2 Mio. and the total car mileage per years can be reduced by 7.2 Mio. km. Comparing the benefits and costs of car-sharing leads to a 3.5 ratio, so that car-sharing is economically useful. Promoting measures by transport policy can be the consideration of car-sharing in urban transport concepts, reservation of parking lots, financial support during the market introduction phase, tax benefits and offering internal company organization assistance. Furthermore it can be expected that an improvement of the conditions of public transport and non-motorized traffic will have a positive impact on the acceptance of car-sharing.
