Requirements for automotive head luminous intensity tests are introduced. The rationale for the developing a non-goniometric photometric test system is discussed. The design of the FPVS (Ford photometric vision system) is presented, including hardware, software, calibration, and system use. Directional intensity plots and regulatory test results obtained from the system are compared to corresponding results obtained from a Ford goniometric test system and goniometer are discussed. Directions for new work are identified. After an introduction, an overview of the requirements on automotive head lamp testing and the difference between goniometer and imaging test methods are presented in section 2. In section 3, details of the optical and mechanical design of the FPVS are discussed. Section 4 provides details of how the vision system is calibrated, both in its angular and photometric properties. Section 5 provides information on specialized software that was developed by the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, to calibrate, operate, and test the FPVS. Section 6, detailed lamp test results obtained from the FPVS are compared to goniometer data. Sources of error are discussed, and directions for improvements and new work are identified.
