The results of these tests on bipolar electrochemical capacitors have shown that a useful energy density above 5 Wh/kg is possible using packaged organic electrochemical capacitors. These tests and earlier tests conducted at INEL have shown that an efficiency above 90 % is obtained at the required average discharge rate (600 W/kg) for the electric vehicle application. The maximum power density of these devices is in excess of 3,000 W/kg. A cycle life on the order of 100,000 cycles has been demonstrated in single cell capacitors. Efforts are being directed at reducing the rise in resistance during extended cycling. These capacitors show that the DOE goals electric vehicle goals can be met. Research efforts are now concentrating on refining sealing process, so stacks with more cells in series and larger cross-sectional area can be constructed. The attainment of consistently uniform voltage division between cells will remain a major issue in the next development phase.
