In the mid-eighties a breakthrough in smart power technology made it possible to integrate on one chip bipolar, CMOS and DMOS circuit elements. Evolution of these new mixed technologies has led to the development of integrated circuit technologies that allows the integration of complex CMOS cores, powercircuits, precision analog functions and non-volatile memory on the same IC. With these technologies system designers can reduce many systems to one or two chips. This approach has proved to be extremely effective in automotive applications.
