This paper reviews some of the methods available to the engineer for the prediction of extreme waves. It then focuses on the long-term individual wave height method in detail. Comments on the errors likely to occur during either collection or analysis of wave data are emphasized since large errors can arise from defective data. In particular, the problem of dependence of data values constituting a sample, statistical assumptions and data limitations are discussed.
