Industrial applications of virtual reality are approaching a first level of maturity. The expected benefits of such applications in automotive design and manufacturing are outlined and a short introduction into the enabling technologies of immersive virtual reality is given. The process of virtual prototyping of automotive interiors, as developed at the University of Michigan, is described as a typical example that uses currently available technology and demonstrates the usability for design analysis and human factors studies. The creator of a virtual prototype from a CAD/CAM model is explained and current problems and results are presented.
