Permanent magnet motors are increasingly considered for electric vehicle drive systems, since they potentially offer a more energy efficient method of realising the required power/torque charcteristics than brushed or asynchronous drive formats. Under normal operating conditions, the drive base speed is restricted by the electronic converter DC link voltage, and does not offer a typical constant power region in its characteristic, as normally required by traction applications. However, this region of operation may be obtained by advancing the motor commutation angle to achieve field weakening control of the motor. The paper summarises previous theoretical work in the field, addresses the practicalities of obtaining field weakening operation, and introduces a novel digital software solution to the problem. It discusses the effects of both machine parameter restrictions and sensor angle resolution on the software algorithm, and shows the algorithm only requires the three discrete rotor position sensors normally used to commutate the stator windings of a brushless DC motor.
