SOCRATES uses cellular radio systems for duplex communication between vehicles and information centres to provide Road Transport Informatics applications. These applications, such as dynamic route guidance and driver information but also fleet management, are described in detail. The corresponding requirements (functions as well as needed transmission capacities) are given, they formed the basis for the SOCRATES architecture and the corresponding application data and transport layer protocols. The SOCRATES architecture is designed as a packet-switched network, all information is transmitted in short, independent datagram messages. The resulted architecture is open and flexible and well prepared for future, yet unforeseen extensions.
