A new force detector has been developed to control an advanced lean combustion engine. The principle of the detector is a special type of the piezoresistive effect of silicon single crystal. A piezoresistive effect analysis system, called PREAPS, has been developed. It enables us to consider stress distribution and three-dimensional anisotropic conductivity. The detector of the silicon crystal achieves the toughness against large stress and high accuracy at high temperature. The detector is used as a key part of a combustion pressure sensor. The combustion pressure is measured by the sensor in an engine cylinder and the fuel consumption and No(x) emission of the engine is reduced.
