A flat lamp has been developed which reduces weight, power, display depth while increasing life and reducing overall display design complexity. The efficiency was further improved by replacing the rear reflector with a phosphor plaque. Dimming requirements can still be met with improved efficiency by proper channel design. The Lockheed Sanders' flat lamp design process leads to a better display design capability.
