With modern insulated-gate power transistors and integrated-circuit technology, an efficient control for a battery-powered electric bicycle can be developed. With a simple control the authors were able to operate a bicycle in tests that confirmed power requirements. For example, the authors found that a 1.0 wind-drag coefficient made calculated power-consumption agree with measured values. The best performing bicycle will probably use nickel-metal hydride batteries for energy storage, a geared 6000-rpm ac induction motor for propulsion, and a microprocessor-based variable-frequency power-limiting speed control. Added sophistication would optimize battery-use to achieve maximum range and give a continuous indication of range available with remaining battery energy. The authors see a future for battery-powered electric bicycles for (1) commuting to work in downtown areas where engine-driven vehicles will be prohibited, and (2) in developing nations where low-cost fiberglass-paved bicycle paths can bring communication and education to remote villages.
