Advances in road transport studies have lead to an increasing demand for high-quality road traffic data. For example, when developing advanced traffic management systems that will run on-line in real-time, large volumes of accurate data are often required for testing, validation and demonstration purposes. This paper describes the initial development of the Instrumented City project, which involves constructing a database of road traffic data provided by Leicestershire County Council for use throughout the UK academic transport research community. A possible architecture for a general transport database is outlined. The Instrumented City project and database are then described in some detail, and finally possible future developments are discussed.
