Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) are seen as some of the IVHS technologies nearest to fruition. The GEMINI project, as part of the European Commission's DRIVE II program, is developing an integrated driver information system linking the Radio Data System Travel Message Channel (RDS-TMC) broadcast service with roadside variable message signs (VMS). This paper describes progress on this project and its planned trials in two European countries. Trials of GEMINI will take place in Birmingham in the UK, and in northern Italy along the Trieste-Brescia corridor. Varying levels of integration will be tested at these sites from linked central databases, to VMS decoding the RDS-TMC messages in the same way as in-vehicle RDS-TMC receivers. The end result of GEMINI is expected to be an integrated service of complementary driver information disseminated to both individual and collective audiences.
