Different variable speed drive systems for the propulsion of electric road vehicles are presented. It is pointed out that the synchronous machine features both a high torque in the base speed range and a high efficiency. Two different synchronous drive systems are presented in this paper: one with a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PSM) and one with the classical separately excited synchronous machine SYM. The different modes of operation, principles of control and advantages in comparison to other drive systems are discussed in the following paper.
