Electric vehicles and electric utility load leveling are important energy-storage technologies that may reduce demand for petroleum and improve air quality, especially in urban areas. Several rechargeable batteries are being developed in the United States for these applications. This paper reviews the status of lead-acid, iron/nickel oxide, zinc/nickel oxide, metal hydride/nickel oxide, zinc/air, zinc/bromine, sodium/sulfur, lithium/iron disulfide and lithium/polymer-electrolyte batteries.
