Several factors are driving the introduction of fibre optic technology into the aerospace industry. The applicability of the technology to communications is already becoming clear, but in the field of optical fibre sensing many questions have yet to be answered and many options require further investigation. One of the acknowledged benefits of fibre optic sensors is their suitability for use in multiplexed arrays. In this paper we discuss an efficient sensor array capable of supporting a number of sensors for different measurands while using a common demultiplexing scheme. The suitability of the adopted approach is reviewed in the light of known aircraft sensing criteria.
